The Gres a Voltzia is a Middle Triassic sandstone formation exposed in the Vosges region of northeastern France, roughly two hundred and forty seven million years old, named for the extinct conifer Voltzia whose foliage it preserves in fine detail alongside insects, crustaceans and other plants from a coastal deltaic environment. The formation is one of the principal sources for understanding plant and insect life in Western Europe during the recovery that followed the end-Permian extinction.
