The Great Astrolabe Reef is a barrier reef in Fiji that surrounds Kadavu Island, the country's fourth-largest island, and arcs north around Ono Island and further to Buliya, enclosing a natural lagoon roughly 100 kilometers south of the main island of Viti Levu. It is one of the largest barrier reefs in the world, cut by numerous deep channels connecting to shallow lagoon areas that serve as breeding grounds for billfish, sharks, tuna, giant trevally, mahi-mahi and snapper. Water temperatures in the reef range from 25 to 32 degrees Celsius, and underwater visibility can reach 40 meters, contributing to its listing in Fiji's Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan.
