Granite Mountain is a bornhardt, a dome of solid rock rising from the surrounding land, formed of pink granite commercially known as Sunset Red, rising more than 860 feet one mile west of Marble Falls, Texas. Quarrying dating to the late nineteenth century has removed large volumes of the distinctive stone, which was used in major construction projects including the Texas State Capitol in Austin and the Galveston Seawall; three proprietors, G. W. Lacy, N. L. Norton and W. H. Westfall, contributed granite for the Capitol's construction beginning in 1882. The extensive mining has substantially altered the mountain's original topography.
