Gomukh, also spelled Gaumukh, is the terminus, or snout, of the Gangotri Glacier and the source of the Bhagirathi River, in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, India, at an elevation of about 4,023 meters. Its name means mouth of a cow in Hindi and related languages, describing the shape of the ice cave from which meltwater emerges, and it lies about 18 kilometers from the town of Gangotri along the Chota Char Dham pilgrimage route linking Gangotri to Kedarnath. As a headwater of the Bhagirathi, a principal tributary of the Ganga, it is a significant Hindu pilgrimage site, but the glacier snout is retreating rapidly, having withdrawn roughly 1.5 kilometers since the 1950s.
