Permian

PUR-mee-un
Phanerozoic

The Permian is the sixth and last period of the Paleozoic Era, spanning about 298.9 to 251.902 million years ago; the following Triassic belongs to the Mesozoic. It ended with the Permian-Triassic extinction event, the most severe mass extinction recorded in the fossil record, associated with the eruption of the Siberian Traps. The Cape Fold Belt formed during the Permian period (300 to 250 million years ago) in the late Paleozoic age, affecting the sequence of sedimentary rock layers of the siliciclastic Cape Supergroup with folding and faulted rocks, which were deposited in the Cape Basin in the southwestern corner of South Africa.
