Devils Garden (Garfield County, Utah)

Hoodoos and Rock Pillars

Devils Garden is a 640 acre area of hoodoos, natural arches and other sandstone formations in Garfield County, Utah, about 17 miles southeast of Escalante, at an elevation of 5,243 feet. Its features, including the slender caprock Metate Arch and the nearby Mano Arch, are carved from Entrada Sandstone dating to the Middle Jurassic period, between 174 and 166 million years ago. The arches and hoodoos continue to be shaped by weathering and erosion, as harder caprock resists processes such as frost action, chemical weathering from rainfall and wind abrasion better than the softer rock beneath it.
