The Gawler Craton covers approximately 440,000 square kilometers of central South Australia, its Precambrian crystalline basement crustal block having been cratonized around 1550 to 1450 million years ago. Before that cratonization it comprised a number of active Proterozoic orogenic belts extending back in time to at least 2450 million years ago, and its rock record includes granitoids, volcanics, metamorphosed sediments and ultramafic intrusives.
