The Gamburtsev Mountains are a mountain range in East Antarctica, buried entirely beneath the ice sheet near Dome A, running about 1,200 kilometers long with peaks up to roughly 3,400 meters high under more than 600 meters of ice and snow. The Soviet Antarctic Expedition first inferred their existence in 1958 through geophysical survey rather than direct sighting, and the range was mapped in detail by the 2007-2009 AGAP project, which flew ice-penetrating radar over 120,000 kilometers of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. Current research places the range's origin around a billion years ago, when the collision of continental plates forming the supercontinent Rodinia built up mountains that were then eroded down, leaving a deep, cold, dense root in the crust and upper mantle beneath. Between roughly 250 and 100 million years ago, rifting is thought to have warmed that ancient root, making it more buoyant and helping to rejuvenate the range into its present form, before the East Antarctic Ice Sheet formed around 35 million years ago and entombed it permanently. A central puzzle in Antarctic geology is why the range's sharp peaks and valleys survived instead of eroding flat, unlike similarly aged mountain belts elsewhere.
