Fernando de Noronha is a volcanic archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, part of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco, lying about 191 nautical miles off the mainland coast. The district covers 21 islands spanning some 26 square kilometers, with the main island home to roughly 3,100 residents. Its highest point, the volcanic peak Morro do Pico, rises 323 meters above sea level. UNESCO recognized the archipelago as a World Heritage Site in 2001 for its importance to marine species.
