A fault scarp is a small, step like offset in the ground surface where one side of a fault has shifted vertically relative to the other. Its shape at the surface comes from the differential erosion of rocks of different resistance combined with the displacement caused by movement along the fault, and it can result from movement along either an older, now inactive fault or a fault that is still active.
