A faceted spur is a ridge that ends in a triangular face, called a triangular facet, with a broad base narrowing to a point at the top. In its most common geological sense the term describes facets produced by active normal faulting along a mountain front or the edge of a rift valley, where repeated fault movement bevels the end of the ridge into a triangular scarp, making faceted spurs useful evidence of recent faulting in the study of earthquake prone regions. The same term is also applied more loosely to triangular ridge faces cut by stream, wave or glacial erosion, in which case it describes essentially the same landform as a truncated spur.
