In geology and geomorphology, an erosion surface is a surface of rock or regolith produced by erosion rather than by construction, such as a lava flow or sediment deposition, or by fault displacement. When such a surface is later buried and preserved within the stratigraphic record it is called an unconformity, though not every unconformity represents a buried erosion surface. Erosion surfaces range enormously in scale, from small rock features to entire mountain ranges, and a large, particularly flat erosion surface is given its own specialized name, such as peneplain, paleoplain, planation surface or pediplain.
