The Eiskar is the only existing glacier in the Carnic Alps, a mountain range spanning Austria and Italy. A cirque glacier, it survives at the relatively low elevation of 2,160 to 2,390 meters above sea level thanks to its shady location and avalanche-fed accumulation, though it has been rapidly turning into a sheet of dead ice, with no significant retreat recorded between 2007 and 2014. It can be reached from below by a klettersteig or more easily from above across the Kellerwand rock face, and its slopes still hold remains of defensive positions from the mountain war of 1915-1918.
