Dyrholaey, once known to sailors as Cape Portland, is a small promontory on Iceland's south coast near the village of Vik, rising to an elevation of about 120 metres. It began as a volcanic island formed by an eruption roughly 100,000 years ago during the Pleistocene, and the Dyrholaey Lighthouse, built in 1927, now stands at the top of the formation facing the sea.
