Dune of Pilat

The Dune of Pilat, also called the Grande Dune du Pilat, is the tallest sand dune in Europe, located at La Teste-de-Buch on the Arcachon Bay in France, about 60 kilometers southwest of Bordeaux on the Atlantic coast. As of a 2018 measurement it stood about 106.6 meters above sea level, spanning roughly 500 meters east to west and 2.7 kilometers north to south across an area of about 1.35 square kilometers, with an estimated volume of some 60 million cubic meters of sand. It is a foredune, a dune running parallel to the shoreline behind the high-tide line, and it continues to migrate landward, gradually encroaching on the forest, roads and structures behind it, including remnants of the Atlantic Wall fortifications, while its exposed coastal position and steep face have also made it a popular paragliding site.
