Dumont Dunes is an area of large sand dunes in the Mojave Desert, about 31 miles north of Baker, California, along State Route 127, bordered by steep volcanic hills with the Amargosa River running slowly through the area. The dunes rise from about 700 feet in elevation where the river runs to more than 1,200 feet at Competition Hill, the tallest dune in the formation, and support creosote bush scrub, some annual grasses and spring wildflowers. The area is administered by the US Bureau of Land Management as a recreational off-highway-vehicle area.
