A drainage basin is an area of land within which all flowing surface water converges toward a single point, such as a river mouth, or drains into another body of water such as a lake or ocean. It is separated from neighboring basins by a drainage divide, a perimeter formed by ridges, hills, and other elevated terrain. A drainage basin may itself be composed of smaller basins that merge at river confluences, forming a hierarchical structure.
