A doline, also known as a sinkhole or shakehole, is an enclosed depression in the ground formed by the collapse of the surface layer, most often over dissolving limestone or other soluble bedrock. The term doline is used interchangeably with sinkhole in much of the geological literature, distinguishing it from a cenote, a related type of sinkhole that exposes groundwater beneath it, and from a ponor or swallow hole, an opening where surface water drains into underground passages.
