A dissected plateau is a plateau area that has been severely eroded, producing sharp relief. Such terrain can appear mountainous, but a dissected plateau is distinguished from an orogenic mountain belt by the absence of the folding, metamorphism, extensive faulting or magmatic activity that accompanies mountain building.
