A dirt cone is a type of depositional glacial feature, not actually made entirely of dirt but built around a core of ice, snow or firn that becomes covered with debris and insulated. If the covering material is thick enough it protects the underlying ice core from melting; if it is thinner than this critical thickness it instead speeds the core's melting through a process called indirect ablation, and the cone begins to shrink and collapse.
