In geology, a dike, also spelled dyke, is a sheet of rock formed within a fracture in a pre-existing body of rock. Dikes can be magmatic or sedimentary in origin: a magmatic dike forms when magma flows into a crack and solidifies as a sheet, cutting across layers of rock or through a contiguous rock mass, while a clastic dike forms when sediment instead fills a pre-existing crack.
