Diatreme

A diatreme is a volcanic pipe produced by a gaseous explosion, forming when rising magma meets shallow groundwater and flashes it to vapor, triggering a violent expansion of steam and volcanic gas. The explosion carves two related features: a shallow surface crater called a maar, and the diatreme itself, a rock-filled fracture running down into the crust that typically forms a steep, inverted cone where it reaches the surface.
