A diapir is a type of intrusion in which a more mobile, ductile material is forced into overlying brittle rock. Depending on the tectonic setting, diapirs range from mushroom shaped structures that form in regions of low tectonic stress, such as the Gulf of Mexico, to narrow bodies of material that move along tectonically formed fractures in the surrounding rock.
