The Dharwar Craton is an Archean continental craton formed between about 3.6 and 2.5 billion years ago in southern India, considered the oldest part of the Indian peninsula. Research in the 2010s found it separates into three crustal blocks, western, central and eastern, divided by several shear zones and each showing a different history of block collision. Its rock record is dominated by tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite gneisses, volcanic-sedimentary greenstone sequences and calc-alkaline granitoids, with the western block preserving the craton's oldest basement rocks in greenstone sequences dated between 3.0 and 3.4 billion years old.
