Deserters Canyon lies on the Finlay River in the Omineca region of central British Columbia, Canada, just upstream from the tip of Finlay Arm on Lake Williston, the reservoir created by the W.A.C. Bennett Dam. The river has carved through a belt of hard conglomerate and sandstone bedrock for roughly 800 metres, part of the Rocky Mountain Trench, cutting low canyon walls, with glacial and alluvial deposits in the surrounding riverbed.
