A dale is a valley, typically an open, gently sloping stretch of ground with a stream running through it, found especially in Yorkshire and in Scotland's Southern Uplands. The word descends from the Old English dael and the Old Norse dalr, a legacy of Viking settlement in the Danelaw, and it appears throughout British place names paired with river names, as in Wensleydale, Teesdale and Airedale.
