Coyote Buttes South

Coyote Buttes South is the southern half of the Coyote Buttes area within the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, managed by the Bureau of Land Management across extreme south-central Utah and north-central Arizona, south of US Highway 89 between Kanab, Utah and Page, Arizona. Like its northern counterpart, home to the already-live formation The Wave, it exposes cross-bedded aeolian Jurassic Navajo Sandstone, its variable coloring produced by iron oxide pigments within the layered rock. The area preserves a dinosaur trackway showing evidence of several different dinosaurs, and its Top Rock section displays iron-rich rock formations standing out sharply against the surrounding sandy plateau. Visiting either Coyote Buttes area requires a hiking permit. This entity documents Coyote Buttes South specifically as a geological formation, the southern section of the Coyote Buttes area distinct from Coyote Buttes North, where The Wave is located.
