A couloir is a narrow, steep-sided gully cut into a mountainside, forming as a seam, scar or fissure in the rock. Couloirs fill with snow and ice in winter, channeling both meltwater and avalanches, and their steep, well-defined lines make them popular routes for mountaineers and extreme skiers.
