Cosiguina stands in Chinandega Department in western Nicaragua, extending toward the Gulf of Fonseca, reaching an elevation of about 872 meters. It is a somma volcano, an older caldera rim still visible around a younger inner cone, with a summit caldera roughly 2 by 2.4 kilometers wide and 500 meters deep that now holds a crater lake. On January 20, 1835, Cosiguina produced the largest eruption recorded in Nicaraguan history, sending ash as far as Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica and, by some estimates, briefly cooling global land temperatures by about 0.75 degrees Celsius. The volcano last erupted in August 1859 and has since shown only minor hydrothermal signs, including an earthquake swarm nearby in 2002.
