Corbetti Caldera

The Corbetti Caldera is an actively deforming volcano in Ethiopia's Main Ethiopian Rift and the site of the Corbetti Geothermal Power Station. About 15 kilometers across, it overlaps an older Pleistocene caldera roughly 30 by 40 kilometers wide, called Awasa, which geologists consider part of the same volcanic system. Corbetti's own caldera holds a central cone called Urji and a large obsidian dome called Chebbi, while the Awasa caldera contains Lake Hawassa, the town of Awasa, and half of the Senkelle Swayne's Hartebeest Sanctuary. This entity documents the Corbetti Caldera specifically as a geological formation, an actively deforming Main Ethiopian Rift caldera paired with the older Awasa caldera.
