Concepcion Volcano forms the northern half of Ometepe Island within Lake Nicaragua, reaching an elevation of about 1,610 meters. It is an active, near-symmetrical stratovolcano built from basaltic and andesitic lava flows and ash, joined by a narrow isthmus to the older, dormant Maderas volcano that forms the island's southern half, together giving Ometepe its distinctive figure-eight shape. Concepcion has erupted repeatedly through the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries, typically producing ash emissions and minor explosive activity, and remains one of Central America's more active volcanoes.
