Comoro Islands

The Comoro Islands are a group of volcanic islands in the Mozambique Channel, the arm of the Indian Ocean lying between Madagascar and the African mainland. The archipelago covers about 2,034 square kilometers across four main islands, Grande Comore, Moheli, Anjouan and Mayotte. Grande Comore is dominated by Mount Karthala, a still active shield volcano rising to 2,361 meters that occupies roughly two thirds of the island. Three of the islands form the sovereign Union of the Comoros, while Mayotte remains a French overseas department.
