Coachella Valley is an arid valley in Riverside County, California, in the United States, lying within the Colorado Desert. It extends about 45 miles from northwest to southeast and roughly 15 miles across, with elevation dropping from 1,600 feet above sea level at its north end to 250 feet below sea level near Mecca. The valley is the product of combined tectonic activity along the San Andreas Fault, which runs along its northeastern side, and the East Pacific Rise extending up through the Gulf of California to the Salton Sea, making it the northernmost extension of the Salton Trough. It is bordered by the Santa Rosa, San Jacinto, Little San Bernardino and San Gorgonio Mountains, with the Salton Sea lying to its southeast.
