Cliff top dunes, also called perched dunes, are dunes that sit on top of cliffs. They are uncommon, because they develop only under unusual conditions, such as a dune advancing up a pre existing slope that is later eroded into a cliff, or a dune forming during a period of high sea level that is later exposed as a cliff face once sea level drops.
