A chute is a vertical or inclined channel or passage through which material moves under gravity; in its natural landform sense it describes a steep-sided passage through which water flows rapidly, sometimes also called a race, flume or river canyon. The same term is also used for engineered structures built to move material downward by gravity, but the natural chute is carved by the erosive force of fast-moving water cutting a steep channel through the landscape.
