The Chonos Archipelago is a chain of low, mountainous, forested islands off the coast of the Aisen region of southwestern Chile, separated from the mainland and from Magdalena Island by the deep Moraleda Channel. The islands are remnants of a submerged section of the Chilean Coast Range, and most carry little permanent population. Its larger islands include Melchor, Benjamin, Traiguen, Riveros, Cuptana, James, Victoria, Simpson, Level, and Luz, with Guamblin Island lying farther offshore. The neighboring Guaitecas Archipelago has its own municipality and holds the only settlement in the wider archipelago, Melinka.
