Chapada Diamantina is a mountainous highland region within the Espinhaco Range in the central Brazilian state of Bahia, built from ancient sedimentary quartzite and sandstone laid down over a billion years ago and later uplifted into a rugged plateau of table mountains, deep canyons, caves and waterfalls. The area takes its name from the diamonds mined there through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A large part of the region is protected as Chapada Diamantina National Park, established in 1985.
