Cerros de Mavecure

The Cerros de Mavecure are three granite hills rising abruptly from rainforest in eastern Colombia's Guainia department, about fifty kilometers south of the city of Inirida along the Inirida River. The tallest, Cerro Pajarito, reaches 712 meters; Cerro Mono rises to 480 meters and Cerro Mavecure itself to 365 meters. Geologically the three hills belong to the Guiana Shield, a Precambrian craton, and their bare granite domes stand out sharply against the surrounding lowland forest. Mavecure is considered a sacred site by several indigenous ethnic groups living in the area, and its name means mountains of the blowgun, after the hunting tool used by local people to catch prey. This entity documents the Cerros de Mavecure specifically as a geological formation.
