Cenote Azul, Bacalar

Cenote Azul at Bacalar lies south of the village center of Bacalar in Quintana Roo, Mexico, near the national highway, on the shore of the Bacalar lagoon, a shallow, pale gemlike-blue body of water whose color comes from its mostly shallow bed except where cenotes create pockets of much greater depth. This cenote is very wide and drops almost immediately to about 90 meters deep, with visitor facilities built around it. It formed, like the region's other cenotes, from the collapse of limestone bedrock into a flooded cavity, its abrupt depth standing in sharp contrast to the shallow lagoon surrounding it. This entity documents Cenote Azul at Bacalar specifically as a geological formation, a 90-meter-deep karst sinkhole on the shore of the Bacalar lagoon, distinct from the identically named Cenote Azul near Puerto Aventuras.
