A cenote is a natural pit or sinkhole that forms when a collapse of limestone bedrock exposes groundwater beneath it. The term originated on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, where the ancient Maya used cenotes as water supplies and, on occasion, for sacrificial offerings. The name derives from a Yucatec Maya word used for any place with accessible groundwater.
