A cataract bog is a rare ecological community formed where a permanent stream flows over a granite outcropping. The moving water keeps the rock edges moist without eroding the surrounding soil, preventing trees and larger shrubs from taking root and creating a narrow, permanently wet, sunlit corridor that supports plant and animal communities adapted to those open, saturated conditions.
