The Carstensz Glacier lies near Carstensz East, a sub-peak of Puncak Jaya in the Sudirman Range on the island of New Guinea, in the eastern highlands of Central Papua, Indonesia. It sits at an elevation of about 4,660 meters, roughly 1.5 kilometers east of the summit tower of Puncak Jaya, and has shrunk sharply in recent decades: in 2002 it measured about 1.4 kilometers long and 0.6 kilometers wide, but by November 2025 it had retreated to only about 440 meters long and 100 meters wide.
