In Scottish geography, a carse is an area of fertile, low lying land found in certain river valleys, including that of the River Forth. Carses are raised estuarine deposits, land that once formed the floor of an estuary before being lifted above sea level by post glacial rebound as the crust rose after the retreat of the ice sheets.
