Carnia is a historical and geographic region in the northeastern Italian area of Friuli, within the Province of Udine in the autonomous region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, bordered by Austria to the north and Veneto to the west. It comprises 27 municipalities south of the main ridge of the Carnic Alps, whose highest peak, Mount Coglians, reaches 2,780 meters, and its mountainous terrain is cut by seven valleys carrying rivers including the Tagliamento, which rises near the Mauria Pass.
