In geography, a cape is a headland, peninsula or promontory that extends out into a body of water, usually the sea, and often marks a pronounced change in the trend of the coastline, which makes capes important landmarks for sea navigation. That same prominence exposes a cape to strong natural erosion, chiefly from tidal action, giving many capes a comparatively short geological lifespan.
