A calanque is a narrow, steep-walled inlet developed in limestone, dolomite or other carbonate strata, found along the Mediterranean coast. It forms as a steep-sided valley within karstic regions, cut either by fluvial erosion or by the collapse of a cave roof, later partly submerged by a rise in sea level.
