Cadore is a historical mountain region in the Province of Belluno in Italy's Veneto region, bordering Austria, Trentino-Alto Adige and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Its valleys are watered by the Piave River, which rises in the Carnic Alps, and the area is administratively organized as a mountain community of 22 municipalities grouped into Comelico, Sappada, Central Cadore and the Boite Valley. Once economically marginal, Cadore built a modern economy on tourism and eyeglass manufacturing. The Renaissance painter Titian was born around 1488 to 1490 in Pieve di Cadore, whose house is preserved and open to visitors. The region passed from Venetian rule after 1420 through Austrian control until it joined a unified Italy in 1866.
