A butte is an isolated hill with steep, often near vertical sides and a small, relatively flat top, smaller in scale than the mesas, plateaus and tablelands it otherwise resembles. The word comes from the French butte, meaning knoll, and the landform is especially associated with the western United States, where the larger equivalent feature is called a mesa.
