Bukhansan is a granite mountain on the northern edge of Seoul, South Korea, whose highest peak, Baegundae, reaches 836.5 meters. Its rock is Jurassic granite that intruded into older Precambrian rock during the Mesozoic era, later exposed and shaped by differential erosion into the jagged, steep sided peaks that define the range today. Granite domes such as Insubong have made Bukhansan a world renowned rock climbing destination, and the surrounding national park, established in 1983, draws about five million hikers a year.
