Bregenzerwald is a major region of the Austrian state of Vorarlberg, formed around the drainage basin of the Bregenzer Ach river and overlapping the Bregenz Forest Mountains, part of the Northern Limestone Alps' flysch zone. Its rock is characterized by Nagelfluh, a conglomerate of rounded rocks compressed together over some 25 million years, and the region divides into a lower Vorderwald of hills near the Rhine valley and a higher Hinterwald reaching 2,134 meters at Glatthorn.
